The origin of rafting started long times ago. It was stopped more and more by the development of the railroad and the growing shipping traffic.

Rafting was a hard and non romantic work for the men. It took place on the large rivers from spring to autumn. The work rested in winter.

This painting is to be seen in the rafter-museum in Schiltach.
