On small waters, for example in
the Black Forest, the rafts were often more than hundred
meters large.
The rafts on the River Rhein were like small, swimming
villages.
On
the rafts worked up to 500 people. Big skill was necessary to
steer such rafts.
The
rafters stood, up to their knees, in the cold water. A sick rafter
was incapable of working and had to wait until he was
totally recoverd.
